Flexible working environment, I provide advice relating to conflicts of interest and assist in integrity investigations. However I do not undertake strictly legal work which I would like some experience in as a legal graduate. Work across the risk and assurance team to assist where necessary, a lot of the work can be ad hoc and responsive.

My day to day responsibilities include tracking budget and budget reporting, reporting on people survey results and interacting with different stakeholders. There are some usual tasks but I'm given opportunities to develop and learn whenever my team can.

Pros and cons of working at NZ Transport Agency - Waka Kotahi

Pros

  • The level of independence afforded to us. Waka Kotahi has a very high trust culture, where you are trusted to work in whatever way/location works most effectively for you.

  • All the managers I have interacted with so far have been extremely knowledgeable and helpful in supporting me and my growth.

  • Great opportunities to work in a range of teams (during the two-year Emerging Professionals programme).

  • Very excited about the promotion opportunities at NZTA. The Emerging Professionals programme means that we finish our rotations with a guaranteed role in the organisation.

  • The organisation has a very dynamic and diverse culture. There are people from various backgrounds and cultures, which adds to the good experience of working there.

Cons

    • The worst thing about my workplace is the increased workload due to budget cuts and restructuring.

    • On the job training has been provided for my daily tasks. I wish that more formal training opportunities were available.

    • Delay in decision making.

    • You can have no work one day and be working to a tight deadline another day. This may be exciting or stressful depending on your preferences.

    • Public sector work may not have some of the luxuries afforded by private companies.
